Warhol and Cars: American Icons

Warhol and Cars: American Icons is the first exhibition to examine Warhol’s enduring fascination with automotive vehicles as products of American consumer society. It will open on February 4th at THE WARHOL. To celebrate Warhol and Cars POLLOCK Fine Art is offering a rare original prepratory work from the Daimler-Benz commission.

In 1986 the German car company Daimler-Benz commissioned Andy Warhol to create a range of artworks inspired by Mercedes models, to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary. However, Warhol’s sudden death in February 1987 left the project unfinished.

This item, features hand-drawn embellishments in red and green felt pen by Warhol himself, over a printed black and white lithograph on thin glossy paper. The work was acquired from RUPERT JASEN SMITH (the printer of nearly all of Andy Warhol's silkscreens from 1977 onwards); it served as a working drawing for the series, which was to be called CARS. That series was celebrated in an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in NY and now some of the same works can be seen at The Warhol.

This rare offering compliments the exhibition at The Warhol, the only museum devoted entirely to the artist.
