August 9, 2007?From Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (painted in part to piss off Henri Matisse) to MTV's Art Battles (a real show, we swear), younger artists have long boosted their reps by dissing their elders. But Warhol vs. Banksy, which opens tomorrow at London's Hospital Gallery, isn't really a takedown, more of an exhibition fight designed to boost both men's reputations (not that either of them really needs further acclaim). On display: Forty-plus works, including a soup can face-off (the late pop artist's Campbell's vs. the boy wonder's Tesco's), Warhol's dollar bill prints next to Banksy's ten-pound notes (in which Princess Diana stands in for her mother-in-law), and, as seen above, Marilyn and Kate. So who wins? Warhol by decision, though the Bristol scribbler holds his own. "I think Warhol would have loved the idea of Banksy," says curator Steven Pollock, who's also the U.K.'s biggest private Warhol dealer. As for Banksy, Pollock says the ever-elusive artist is "aware of the show. We sent word it's taking place." That's another thing the two artists share: They're equally hard to reach.
